Greetings Family! I’m so proud to launch South Island Gullah Geechee Project on Juneteenth. This project began with a photograph, more specifically, it began with my great-grandmother, Rebecca Williams, and a desire to understand the lives, stories, and wisdom that shaped my family long before I was born.
The South Island Gullah Geechee Project was created to preserve and share the stories, voices, and lived experiences of the Gullah Geechee people of Georgetown County, South Carolina and surrounding area. Through oral histories, interviews, family stories, and community engagement, we are creating opportunities for elders to share their experiences while encouraging younger generations to listen, document, and carry those stories forward.
The question is not whether Gullah Geechee culture will survive. It already has. The question is whether future generations will have access to the stories.
Thank you for joining me at the beginning of this journey.
